Inherited from Old Swedish flærþ. Cognate of Icelandic flærð. Compare Old English fleard of uncertain origin. Arguably cognate of German flehen, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌸𐌻𐌰𐌹𐌷𐌰𐌽 (gaþlaihan).
