[edit]Borrowed from German Low German Fahrtüg, Fahrtüüg, also Fartüg (in Adelung's High German dictionary, which also has Danish Fartoy), cf. German Fahrzeug (= fahren (“to go, drive”) + Zeug (“gear”)), Dutch vaartuig. Equivalent to fare + tøj.
