The Germans have a word for it—fernweh—literally, an ache for distant places. Maybe the dowdy recreational vehicle can be a vehicle of discovery, a cure for farsickness, a Huck Finn raft of escape for the middle-aged. But that doesn't have to be decided by us. Perhaps, just as the cigar is sometimes simply a cigar, the RV is sometimes just a cool way to get out of the house and see some new stuff—even at $4 a gallon.
