From Proto-Tai *wanᴬ (tooth).[1]

In Northern Tai, cognate with Bouyei fanz.

In Central Tai, cognate with Nong Zhuang faenz.[2]

In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Thai ฟัน (fan), Northern Thai ᨼᩢ᩠ᨶ (fan), Ahom 𑜇𑜝𑜃𑜫 (phlan).

Possibly cognate with Proto-Austronesian *nipen[3] (whence Tagalog ngipin, Maori niho).

Within Kra-Dai, compare Sui vyanl, wyanl (tooth), Southern Kam bienl, biaenl (tooth).
