From Proto-Germanic *spurô (spur), from Proto-Indo-European *sperH- (to kick). Probably borrowed from Old French esperon. Documented in local Latin documents, as asperon, at least since 1128. Cognate of Italian sprone, Spanish espolón, French éperon, Occitan esporon.
