[edit]From engoumar, probably from en- (“in”) + a descendant of Proto-Germanic *gaumijaną (“to heed, keep”).[1] Compare Old Norse geyma (“keep, watch”), Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌿𐌼𐌾𐌰𐌽 (gaumjan, “watch”).
