From Middle High German einveltec, einvaltic, from Old High German *einfaltīg (suggested by derivatives Old High German einfalto, einfaltīglīhho (adverb)), equivalent to Einfalt +‎ -ig. Compare Old High German einfalt (simple; sincere, adjective), Old Frisian enfaldich (> Saterland Frisian eenfooldich), German Low German eenfoldig, Danish enfoldig, Dutch eenvoudig.
