[edit]Borrowed from Middle Low German ēgentlik (“actual”), related to Swedish egentlig, German eigentlich, Dutch eigenlijk. Derived from the adjective Middle Low German ēgen (“own”), from Proto-Germanic *aiganaz, cf. Danish egen,German eigen, English own.
