Borrowed from Ancient Greek ἔκθλιψις (ékthlipsis, a squeezing out), from ἐκθλίβω (ekthlíbō, to squeeze out), from θλίβω (thlíbō, to squeeze; to compress).

  1. (phonology) The dropping out or suppression from a word of a consonant, with or without a vowel.
  2. (phonology, classics) In Latin, the elision of a final /m/, with the preceding vowel, before a word beginning with a vowel.
