Etymology

From the same stem as gaišs (bright, light): Proto-Baltic *gīd- (with an extra syllable -ro), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰəid-, *gʷʰīd-, *gʷʰid- (bright, shining). Cognates include Lithuanian giẽdras, gaidrùs (bright, clear), Ancient Greek φαιδρός (phaidrós, bright, clear, happy).[1]
