[edit]Inherited from Old Czech datel, from Middle High German datel, from Ancient Greek δάκτυλος (dáktulos) ("a date", but also "a finger"), which is probably of Semitic origin; compare Arabic دَقَل (daqal) (variety of date palm).[1]
