döma (present dömer, preterite dömde, supine dömt, imperative döm)

  1. to sentence, to judge

Domen hörer Gudhi til, Therföre then som dömer vthan Gudz befalning, han tagher Gudhi hans äro jfrå.
Judgment belongs to God; therefore, whoever judges without God's command takes God's honor away from Him.

Hård var den lott vi dömdes att få -
målet - det må Herren förklara!
Hard was the lot we were sentenced to receive -
the goal - the Lord may explain!
  2. to deem, to make a judgement
  3. (sports) to umpire, to referee
  4. (idiomatic, in "döm om min förvåning (när ...)") imagine my surprise (when ...)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The spelling of this verb is irregular. Phonetically it should be *dömma, but the -m- is never doubled. The same is true of the related noun dom and derivatives.
