Etymology

From Vulgar Latin *eccum sīc, corresponding to Italian ecco +‎ . Closely parallel to Dalmatian coisa, Friulian cussì, Istriot cussèi, Sardinian gósi (bosìe, deàsi, etc.), Venetan cusì. Compare also Catalan així, French ainsi, Portuguese assim, Spanish así, Romanian așa, Sicilian accussì.

The original geminated -cc-, though lost in the standard language, is still found in many regional Italian varieties.
