[edit]From translingual Corytophanidae + -id. Corytophanidae is derived from Ancient Greek κόρῠθος (kórŭthos, “helmet”) + φᾰνερός (phănerós, “visible”) + -idae, referring to the lizard’s prominent helmet-like head crest.[1]
