Borrowed from Ancient Greek κατάπασμα (katápasma, powder), from πάσσω (pássō, sprinkle).

  1. (medicine, obsolete) A medicinal powder used by the ancients to sprinkle on ulcers, to absorb perspiration, etc.[1]
