[edit]From Middle Welsh caled, from Proto-Celtic *kaletos (compare Breton calet, Middle Irish calath, calad), from Proto-Indo-European *kal- (“hard”). See Latin callum (“a hard substance”). Possible doublet of call (“wise, sensible”).
