[edit]Affixed cadang + -an, from Malay cadangan (“plan; suggestion”).
- The sense of “backup, reserve, or substitute” is reinforced as semantic loan from Javanese ꦕꦝꦔꦤ꧀ (cadhangan, “reserve, back up, spare”), ꦕꦝꦁ (cadhang, “to hold out the hands to receive”), from Old Javanese caḍaṅ (“preparation”).
