From cụ (great grandparent, elderly person) +‎ Khốt, the latter clipped from Khốt-ta-bít, which in turn transliterates Russian Хоттабыч (Xottabyč), the eponymous character from Lazar Lagin's novel Старик Хоттабыч (Starik Xottabyč) "Old Man Khottabych" [1938].
