[edit]Inherited from Latin *carnem ligat (literally “ties the meat”). Akin to Aromanian cãrleagã. Compare similar formations in carnival, Italian carnevale from *carnem levāre, Old Italian carasciale from *carnem laxāre, and Spanish carnestolendas (“three days preceding the beginning of Lent”) from *carnis tollendus.
