[edit]Borrowed from Upper Sorbian buwoł, from Proto-Slavic *byvolъ (“buffalo”), from Ancient Greek βούβαλος (boúbalos, “antelope, wild ox”). Cognate with Polish bawół, Czech buvol, Serbo-Croatian bȉvol, Russian бу́йвол (bújvol).
