Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic бꙑволъ (byvolŭ), from Proto-Slavic *byvolъ, from Vulgar Latin *būvalus, from Latin būbalus, from Ancient Greek βούβαλος (boúbalos). Doublet of bour, which was inherited from Latin.
