Etymology

[edit]

First attested in 1776. Borrowed from a Slavic language, from Proto-Slavic *bujь (overexcited, volatile), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰuH- (to become, to grow).[1] Compare Serbo-Croatian бујан (exuberant, lush), Old Church Slavonic боуи (bui, stupid).
