[edit]From Hindustani بِرْیَانی (biryānī) / बिरयानी (biryānī), from Classical Persian بریانی (biryānī), from بریان (biryān, “roast”) (from برشتن (birištan, “to roast”)) + the suffix ـی (-ī).[1]
