[edit]beta + suppe, first part beta (“a bite”), dialectal form of bete (“a mouthfull, a bite; a small piece”), from Old Norse biti (“a bite, mouthfull”), from Proto-Germanic *bitô, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeyd- (“to split, crack”).
The second part suppe (“soup”), borrowed from German Low German suppe, soppe, sope (“soup”), from Proto-Germanic *supô, *suppô, *suppǭ (“broth, soup”).
