beta +‎ suppe, first part beta (a bite), dialectal form of bete (a mouthfull, a bite; a small piece), from Old Norse biti (a bite, mouthfull), from Proto-Germanic *bitô, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeyd- (to split, crack).

The second part suppe (soup), borrowed from German Low German suppe, soppe, sope (soup), from Proto-Germanic *supô, *suppô, *suppǭ (broth, soup).
