- (surgery, colloquial) kidney dish, emesis basin: a shallow basin with a kidney-shaped base and sloping walls used in medical and surgical wards to receive soiled dressings and other medical waste, commonly known as Dutch nierbekken (“renal pelvis”, literally “kidney-shaped basin”).
