[edit]From Middle High German beden, from Old High German bedōn, northern variant of betōn.
Cognate to German beten (“to pray”). The verb at hand in German bitten (“to ask, beg”) does not exist in Central Franconian.

[edit]- The original past participle is weak jebett. The strong form jebedde is a variant formed on the model of German gebeten.
