Etymology
[edit]Historically an izafet II compound of ayaq (“foot”) + qabı (“container, case”), but hardly perceived as such presently due to phonological developments: ayaq lost its secondary stress and /ɡ/ in qabı is devoiced to /k/, something that only happens word-internally. Furthermore, the nominative plural is normally ayaqqabılar, not ayaqqabları.
Cognate with Turkish ayakkabı and Crimean Tatar ayaqqap. Middle Armenian ոտնաման (otnaman) may be a Turkic calque.
