Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Middle French aussi, from Old French ossi, ausi, alsi (as, in the same way as), from Vulgar Latin *ale si (other so, else so), from Latin alid, aliud (other, another, any other, else) + sīc (so, thus); probably a calque of Frankish *allswā (as, likewise, in the same way). Compare also similarly formed Old French altresi (as, in the same way as, also, as well).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /o.si/
  • Audio:(file)

    • 1846, George Sand, The Devil's Pool:
Dans le bois, quand mon fils dormait et que tu dormais aussi, j’ai failli t’embrasser tout doucement.
In the wood, when my son was sleeping and you were sleeping too, I almost kissed you softly.
  2. as (used for equal comparisons)
