[edit]From Latin asylum, from Ancient Greek ἄσυλον (ásulon, “sanctuary”) + Latin polīticus (“of or relating to civil policy”), from Ancient Greek πολῑτῐκός (polītikós, “civic, constitutional, public”). Equivalent to asile (“asylum”) + politique (“political”). Compare English political asylum, German politisches Asyl n, Spanish asilo político m, etc.
