[edit]From Arabic عَاقِل (ʕāqil, “reasonable; intelligent”), active participle of عَقَلَ (ʕaqala, “to be endowed with reason, to have intelligence, to be conscious, to realize”), derived from the root ع ق ل (ʕ q l).
