[edit]From Old Galician-Portuguese apostolo (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), borrowed from Late Latin apostolus, from Ancient Greek ἀπόστολος (apóstolos, “messenger, one sent forth”), from ἀποστέλλω (apostéllō, “to send off”), from ἀπό (apó, “from”) + στέλλω (stéllō, “to set”).
