From Latin ante (preposition and prefix); akin to Ancient Greek ἀντί (antí), Sanskrit अन्ति (anti), Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌳- (and-) (only in compounds): compare answer, along, German ant-, ent- (in compounds). Doublet of anti-.
