Italian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Latin angustus, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enǵʰu-, from *h₂enǵʰ-. The correspondence of Latin short /u/ to Italian /u/ (rather than Italian /o/ as in agosto, mosto) indicates that the form is possibly a semi-learned borrowing (compare gusto).
