[edit]- According to Fr. Domingo de los Santos (1835), the word is from the Tingues or the Tinguianes, literally, “hilldwellers” (cf. Malay tinggi (“high; tall”)), near the area of modern San Pablo, Laguna, Nagcarlan, Laguna, and Lucena, Quezon, likely referring to the area near Mount Banahaw (not to be confused with Tinguian people or Itneg in the Cordilleras).
