Likely from a compounding of ant (against) +‎ lamen (tool). Cognate with Old English andlōma (tool). Akin to Old English ġelōma and Old High German lōmi, luomi.

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish علامه (ʿallāme, exceedingly learned, well versed in genealogies),[1][2] from Arabic عَلَّامة (ʕallāma).[3]
