Etymology

From Proto-Celtic *ad-glādīti, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰleh₂d-, perhaps an alternative form of *ǵʰreh₁d-. Cognate with Ancient Greek κέχλᾱδα (kékhlāda, I exulted) (Pindar) and possibly Sanskrit ह्रादते (hrādate, make a noise).
