Etymology

[edit]

First attested in the 16th century, but probably a Middle Dutch formation based on achterdenken. The form -docht (from Proto-Germanic *þanhtaz) displays Ingvaeonic influence (compare Old English þōht, Old Frisian thōchte): achterdacht is the expected form, but is now long obsolete.
