[edit]a- + mål, first part is referring to the letter A being used as a grammatical ending. Last part from Old Norse mál (“language, speech”), from Proto-Germanic *maþlą (“gathering; speech”), of *mōtaną (“to be allowed, to be permitted to, may”), from Proto-Indo-European *mōd- (“to permit, make able”), of *med- (“to measure, give advice, heal”).
