[edit]From Wotan (“Odin”) + -s- + Tag (“day”), a learned calque of Middle Low German wôdenesdach and other descendants of Proto-West Germanic *Wōdanas dag. Doublet of earlier Wodenstag, which is directly from Middle Low German. Compare English Wednesday.
