[edit]Named after a fiefdom that was located on the territory of the municipality. The name of the fiefdom derives in turn from Old Dutch wisch (“damp pasture”). Related to Old English wisca (“river meadow”); all are probably related to Proto-Celtic *udenskyos (“water”) (River Wiske).[1][2]
