Apostrophes

[edit]

Is there any reason to use apostrophes to mark glottal stops in all cases? It's my understanding that Old Tupi is a CV language and that /ʔ/ is a marginal sound that occurs when a word or syllable begins would otherwise begin with a vowel. It's thus always implicit in those cases and there's not much of a need to write it down. At least that's what Wikipedia suggests in its phonology section for Old Tupi. There's a handful of "minimal pairs" like 'aba/aba and 'e/é, and some sequences of vowels that don't have it, as in eẽ and aan. Also, this Wikipedia section has no sources at all. I personally wouldn't trust it. Trooper57 (talk) 19:43, 25 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I will trust your discretion. In the meanwhile I've added an "unsourced section" disclaimer to the Wikipedia page. Pescavelho (talk) 15:00, 27 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Jus to be clear, we didn't make any changes regarding the spelling, we're simply using what Navarro proposed. I also have my disagreements with some of his choices, but there's no need to make a new spelling just for Wiktionary anytime soon. Trooper57 (talk) 15:12, 27 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
