Gun is a Gbe language spoken in the extreme southeastern corner of Benin and the extreme southwestern corner of Nigeria, with Porto Novo and Badagry being the most prominent Gun-speaking cities. This page details standard practice to be followed on all Gun entries.

Beninese Orthography

All letters in the Beninese Orthography should be used in page titles, including ɖ, ɛ, and ɔ. Tones should not be marked in the page title, however they may be added to the headwordline. High tones are marked with the acute accent (´), low tones with the grave accent (`), and mid tones are unmarked. In pages written with the Beninese orthography there should be a link to the version written in the Nigerian Orthography to ensure adequate representation of both written forms.

Nigerian (Yorùbá-based) Orthography

All letters in the Nigerian Orthography should be used in page titles, including ẹ, ọ, and ṣ. Tones should not be marked in the page title, however they may be added to the headwordline. High tones are marked with the acute accent (´), low tones with the grave accent (`), and mid tones are unmarked. In pages written with the Nigerian orthography, there should be a link to the version written in the Beninese Orthography to ensure adequate representation of both written forms. Furthermore, due to inconsistencies with the Nigerian Orthography (see: àkwẹ́ vs. àkuẹ́, ayihúndátọ́ vs. aihúndátọ́), both forms may be written, with links to the other spelling. Due to the antiquatedness of the Nigerian Orthography, words may often have spellings that don't reflect how they sound (see: whé = /ɣʷé/ (hwé in Benin) and /xʷé/ (xwé in Benin)), thus one should try their best to add IPA transliterations as best they can that reflect how the word is actually said, in lieu of basing it off of the orthography alone.
