[edit]Form Middle High German welf, welfe, from Old High German hwelf, from Proto-West Germanic *hwelp, from Proto-Germanic *hwelpaz. The consonantism in modern Welpe is from Middle Low German welp, from Old Saxon hwelp. Cognate to English whelp.
