Apologies for not welcoming you sooner! We always need help with our foreign languages, particularly as there is more of them than there is of English. ==Welcome==

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Conrad.Irwin 01:27, 5 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

deleting mistakes

[edit]

If you make a spelling or similar mistake, please tag the page with {{delete}}, rather than just blanking it; that ensures someone will delete it presently. Thanks ;-) Robert Ullmann 12:50, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just saying hi.

[edit]

Hi, Winged eel! I saw you in Robert's scrapbook. I was impressed with your profile, so I decided to snag and create your missing Babel box template. That's Mongolian, right? I hope I got the right one! :-D Snakesteuben 10:11, 6 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

P.S. I don't know if this is your cup of tea, but I want to make sure you know it exists. Omni-language wiki test project. Winged eel is a way kewl name, BTW. Snakesteuben 10:21, 6 April 2008 (UTC) (aka Winter)Reply

Uzbek? If you give me the 2-letter code, sure, I'll see if I can snag one. :-) Snakesteuben 11:40, 6 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

That ought to do it. And it seems to be working on this fellow's page. He's the only one trying to use it at this time. Gheheh. Snakesteuben 12:08, 6 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Suffixes

[edit]

The convention we have on Wiktionary is that suffix entries start with a dash, so I've moved your addition to the ng entry to -ng and added that to the {{see}} at the top of the page (see [1] and -ng). Thryduulf 14:28, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've fixed all the others in Category:Uzbek nominal affixes for you now as well. If any other presently existing Uzbek words are suffixes, then these also need to moved accordingly. If you need any help with this, then mark the page (or Uzbek section) with {{rfc|This needs to be moved to -x}} (where -x is the location it needs to be) and create an entry on the requests for cleanup page (click the + icon on the template).
Similarly prefix entries are followed by a -, compare en (word), en- (prefix) and -en (suffix). Thryduulf 15:00, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Good spot. After checking Category:English suffixes I see they should be sorted by the first letter after the -. To do this use the format word where "word" is the entry "-word". Thryduulf 09:01, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Alternative spellings

[edit]

There's ===Alternative spellings=== per WT:ELE. Spellings are agnostic with regard to particular part of speech/meanings, so they're listed higher in the indentation hierarchy. Also, they should be wikified, if they merit inclusion by themselves, and content duplicated to them as well. --Ivan Štambuk 17:12, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

улс

[edit]

Hi,

do you happen to know if улс means something as state? I'm asking this because I saw it in Mongolia uls and Il khan uls. The latter being a medieval khanate in Persia and West-Asia. Thanks Mallerd 15:30, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well, decided to just create the entry and if it's really wrong, someone shall edit it. Mallerd 14:39, 19 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
