Welcome
[edit]Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.
If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:
- Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
- Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
- Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
- If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
- If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
- Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (
~~~~
) which automatically produces your username and timestamp. - You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.
Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Conrad.Irwin 16:30, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
There's no need to use Babel-9 etc, just use {{Babel}}
which supports up to 100 languages. Conrad.Irwin 16:30, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
Usage notes that aren't usage notes
[edit]There's no need to use the Usage notes header for lists of similar terms: we already have the See also header for that (there are also more specialized headers such as Coordinate terms and Related terms for some cases). See WT:ELE for details. Also, please don't add a second identical header under an existing header. Chuck Entz (talk) 15:55, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
Alternative forms
[edit]We make one the main entry, and the rest are alternative form entries that only serve to redirect the reader to the main form. Please do not add other alternative forms after the {{alternative form of}}
template. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 07:47, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
Language
[edit]Hey. When you add etymologies, please get the right language - here for example you put an etymology for Portuguese, not Galician. Thanks and keep up your edits! --New WT User Girl (talk) 21:08, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
Consulta
[edit]Boas, tes a consulta aquí. Saúdos, --Elisardojm (talk) 18:06, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
This needs to be split into smaller pages or deleted. A single page can't transclude all of those other pages, so only half of them display and the page shows up intermittently in Category:ParserFunction errors. Also see Category:Pages where template include size is exceeded. Chuck Entz (talk) 17:40, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
