Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! -saph (usertalkcontribs) 12:46, 1 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Placement of tables

[edit]

I've had to revert every single one of your edits that add massive tables to the exact wrong place in an entry, i.e. between the headword line and the definitions. These tables must (a) be placed below the definitions and (b) be made collapsible. — SURJECTION / T / C / L / 11:00, 10 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

OK, apparently the tables were already collapsible, but simply expanded by default. In any case, these tables absolutely do not belong above the definitions. They should probably be under Coordinate terms. — SURJECTION / T / C / L / 11:02, 10 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
So if I add them to co-ordinate terms & make them collapsed by default, then they can stay? Pvanp7 (talk) 11:21, 10 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Also, does 'co-ordinate terms' just mean 'related terms'? Pvanp7 (talk) 11:28, 10 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
"Related terms" is for etymologically related terms. "Coordinate terms" is for semantically related terms. Yes, if they're added to the correct place and ideally collapsed by default, they are OK. — SURJECTION / T / C / L / 11:42, 10 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

I would add that adding raw, hard-coded tables to a multitude of entries creates a maintenance nightmare – any change to the template now has to be manually done in umpteen different places. Please create a template for this purpose, such as {{en-pronominal adverbs}}, and transclude it in the entries. I'd be very grateful if you can go back and do this - otherwise someone else is going to have to clean up after you. Thanks. This, that and the other (talk) 02:13, 14 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
It will be very difficult for me to create a template, but I can work on it. Don't expect much for the next few weeks though, since I don't know anything about programming. I'll probably do some maintenance on the existing tables between then. Thanks. Pvanp7 (talk) 02:19, 14 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Pvanp7 creating a template that is "constant" (doesn't vary from one entry to the next) is actually quite easy - you simply copy the table into the template Template:en-pronominal adverbs and then replace the table in individual entries with the code
{{en-pronominal adverbs}}
That's it. No programming knowledge is required.
In any event, please don't feel under time pressure. Thanks for your contributions so far. This, that and the other (talk) 02:44, 14 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Wow! That's significantly simpler than what @Benwing2 told me about creating category pages! I'm glad tables are simpler! Thank you so much!!! Pvanp7 (talk) 04:56, 14 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
