Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Thadh (talk) 14:18, 23 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yiddish entries

[edit]

I'm hardly in the position to dispute any of the substantive content that you've written, but please learn a few templates and standards as applied to Yiddish entries. List the gender of the noun in {{yi-noun}} using "g=m" or whatever the gender of the noun is. Simple plural forms can be indicated with shorthands like "pl=s" or "pl=n". For non-English entries, we generally don't write glosses starting in capital letters and ending with a full stop/period. Learn the difference between [[]], {{alt}}, {{m}}, {{l}}, {{cog}}, {{bor}}, {{der}} and so on, and use them as appropriate in etymology and usage note sections. You even misspelled קוזינקע (kuzinke) as קוזניקע (kuznike) earlier, which I had to fix. Also, why is אויסזידלונג (oyszidlung) listed as a noun, even though its glosses are verb definitions??

Either way, a language as, frankly, ignored as Yiddish on Wiktionary welcomes any editors who want to contribute. Just please, re-read your entries before you post them, and do go back and fix your older Yiddish entries, if you please. Insaneguy1083 (talk) 05:01, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yeeeah, that's my bad. Chances are I won't be contributing future entries as I've largely finished what I set out to do - which was going through some specific dictionaries and filling things out. If I happen to find Blumenthal's dictionary I may do more, though? I'll see about fixing some of my entries but I can't be certain as to whether I'll notice, I'm terrible at that sort of thing.
Regarding category errors, I would sometimes copypaste an existing entry and edit from there to make things easier, and obviously, formatting errors would slip through. That's my bad - I'm autistic and easily get overwhelmed, it's something I'm working on. On the note of etymology bits, I used {{bor}} as the majority of these were such, though I wouldn't be surprised if I overgeneralised at a certain point in the thick of it, especially in more complex etymologies.
I'm glad to receive some feedback on these entries, the words are certainly very obscure and not commonly used nowadays. - Plague von Karma (talk) 10:02, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
