Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! --Apisite (talk) 01:32, 27 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Inferring dialectal pronunciations

[edit]

Hi, do you speak Hakka, Hokkien or Teochew? If you, please do not infer the pronunciation of words/compounds in those dialects from the pronunciation of individual characters. RcAlex36 (talk) 03:48, 3 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

songket

[edit]

Hey, do you happen to know which syllable of songket is stressed in Malay or Indonesian? (I'd guess it's the one currently marked with a low tone...) ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 13:59, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Generally the penultimate syllable is stressed in the Malay phonology, unless its vowel is a schwa. So in the case of the word songket, it is the first syllable that is stressed. Patnugot123 (talk) 14:17, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Would you be able to clean up the pronunciation in a few of the languages? A sign similar to ' is used for marking primary stress. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 14:19, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Tamil loans in Malay

[edit]

Hi Patnugot123! Thanks a lot for your thorough cleanup and expansion of Appendix:Malay words of Tamil origin! Maybe you can also update the references. The second one listed there is available on the Internet Archive[1], and doesn't look very trustworthy to me. The author heavily leans on Wilkinson and includes inherited words such as asam, mabok, tali, and loans from Arabic such as Yahudi as Tamil loans; his structural comparison, if really meant to detect Tamil influence on Malay, is very dubious, as he seems to ascribe "compounding" (as in air mata), reduplication and the use of interrogative particles to Tamil influence, which betrays little knowledge of common MP and AN syntax. I can think of Hoogervorst papers for better reference, but maybe you have other sources. –Austronesier (talk) 07:10, 16 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

I'll add some references later. Some of the words I deleted already have Wiktionary entries about them. And the same goes to some of the words I added. As for the second reference listed there, I couldn't agree more. Patnugot123 (talk) 07:01, 20 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
