If you don't add proper headwords to your entries, they will just get deleted. SemperBlotto (talk) 09:33, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
Welcome
[edit]Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.
If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:
- Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
- Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
- Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
- If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
- If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
- Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (
~~~~
) which automatically produces your username and timestamp. - You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.
Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Chuck Entz (talk) 17:11, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
IPA
[edit]As I said before, if you don't know IPA, don't try to add it to entries. The IPA you added to your last two (ǫ́ʔáá and yáá) was very clearly wrong, and incorrect IPA is a lot worse than an entry not having a pronunciation section. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 05:51, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- Since you asked, /y/ is a vowel (as found in French lune, for example), and Western Apache orthographic <y> evidently corresponds to /j/, as it does in English. But the main point is that copying blindly without knowing anything about IPA means that you can't catch basic mistakes or realise when a source is not using standard IPA but is instead using some Americanist notation-influenced version. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 05:59, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- You're right j makes that sound, i thought the source had it correct for some reason. I'll fix it!Ndołkah (talk) 06:01, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- Now that you've fixed that on yáá, I know it's not definitely wrong, but I still don't know if it's right, and what worries me is that neither do you. That's why I still think you shouldn't add IPA, at least not from the sources you've been relying on. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 06:05, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- UCLA isn't a good source? What about Wikipedia? Or Omniglot?Ndołkah (talk) 06:07, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- No, the UCLA Phonetics website is not a good source — their focus is not on describing Western Apache in particular. Wikipedia and Omniglot are also not sufficient. A good source would be a book or peer-reviewed paper on Western Apache. By the way, you are adding entries with inconsistent spellings, which makes me concerned as well — the glottal stop should be spelled with ʼ, not ' or ʔ (the fact that you used both makes me think you're copy-pasting without checking). —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 06:12, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- Well there are none available because my people's language is nearing extinction I am doing my best to continue the work of others. Where did I do that? I know it should be spelled with ' but IPAd with ?.Ndołkah (talk) 06:15, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- There are lots of resources; I see a long list of them at Western Apache language#Bibliography. If you don't have access to them, I can see if I can find any for you. You did that on ǫ́ʔáá. And as I'm trying to tell you, it should be spelled with ʼ, not ' (and the IPA is ʔ, not ?). Both o these are mistakes you have made, and it does make a difference. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 16:20, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- I know ? and ʔ are different as for ' that's how it's actually spelled most of the time! I'm going to finally buy the dictionary though. and any resources you can find for me would be great!Ndołkah (talk) 19:56, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
Hi Ndołkah,
There are only a few weeks left to take the Community Insights Survey! We are 30% towards our goal for participation. If you have not already taken the survey, you can help us reach our goal! With this poll, the Wikimedia Foundation gathers feedback on how well we support your work on wiki. It only takes 15-25 minutes to complete, and it has a direct impact on the support we provide.
These entries do not seem to meet WT:ATTEST. For English entries, a word needs to be attested in at least three independent books or other durably archived media. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 04:08, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- Did you bother to look? I saw monsterdick on several google books in a search. Take them to RFV?Ndołkah (talk) 04:11, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- I checked for "musclecock", saw nothing, and I figured that you didn't know about the rule. RFV is unnecessary if you can just add the quotes yourself. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 04:19, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- musclecock I need help with, as I've only heard of it in porn, at gym, etc I don't recall having read it anywhere but I am sure it exists, if you don't mind I will recreate muscledick as that one is attestable through gbooks at least much like monster cockNdołkah (talk) 04:21, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- You're Troy / Luciferwildcat, aren't you? I was thinking it over the other day and this seems to confirm. Equinox ◑ 12:36, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- My name is actually Tiffany-Athena and I'm not sure who that is.Ndołkah (talk) 13:36, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- I came to that conclusion when they first started editing as an IP. The combination of their interests and the way they seem to have picked up where the last Troy/Luciferwildcat sock (Baymiwuk) left off has only strengthened that impression. They've been careful with their edits and haven't caused any trouble, so I chose not to do anything. There are no confirmed edits by previous accounts recent enough to run checkuser comparisons on, so there's no way I can prove anything. Chuck Entz (talk) 16:12, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah I'm convinced now, having glanced at the Wikipedia histories too, various niche California topics. Equinox ◑ 17:07, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- So why aren't we blocking? —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 22:17, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Equinox, Chuck Entz: Nobody answered me, so I blocked him. If you disagree, feel free to explain or change the block; I simply think that the status quo should not be tolerating someone who makes these kinds of messes again and again. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 18:24, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
- Why are you blocking me? This is unfair I'm a mature woman here!Ndołkah (talk) 07:02, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- What messes? Because I didn't know how to enter the slang gloss correctly? I mean is it really required to enter perfect entries? I succeeded at doing an excellent job on the coverage of Patagonian wildlife terms and also all those Yámana words. Cut me some slack amigos I'm new here for crying out loud and my name is Athena!Ndołkah☆ (talk) 10:01, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
