Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk (discussion) and vote pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~, which automatically produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the beer parlour or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome!

Note: this comment is part of a synchronised thread. You can reply by clicking the [edit] link next to the comment's heading, or following this link. To ensure that I know you've responded, make a null edit to my talk page (go to my talk page, click on the 'edit this page' tab, then click the submit button at the bottom). Once you have replied, feel free to remove this boilerplate.

Please enter translations only for English terms, to reduce the redundancy. --Connel MacKenzie T C 03:50, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the welcome. So basically what you mean is that non-English words should only have translations into non-English languages? Ingoolemo (talk) 04:01, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Correct. Thanks for the syncronized talk link idea here. --Connel MacKenzie T C 04:08, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Another thing; you did not cite soureces for ministerial, and it looks very OED-ish. Please remember that we don't glom dicdefs here (being a dictionary) so the copyvio threshold is much lower than you are probably used to a Wikipedia. If it is from the OED, please tag it with {{delete}}, so I can delete it and restart it using the Webster's 1913 definition. --Connel MacKenzie T C 04:20, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I did use Random House as a source, but I did my best to rephrase it in my own words. If that isn't good enough, feel free to tag the article and replace it with the free version. Thanks for the assistance, Ingoolemo (talk) 02:20, 5 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I guess my complaint then, is that your writing style is too good!  :-)   --Connel MacKenzie T C 08:20, 6 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

A few other things...

I'm keeping the boilerplate at the top until I work out how I want to use it. Hopefully you aren't waiting for me to remove it before you reply.

I'm sorry if I'm being overly copyvio alert at the moment. I'm in the middle of researching fuck#Etymology (User:Primetime copyvio of AHD) and am sort of stuck in that mindset.

Sorry, I forgot earlier to include {{pediawelcome}}, so here it is now... --Connel MacKenzie T C 03:58, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary!

If you have edited Wikipedia, you probably already know some basics, but Wiktionary does have a few conventions of its own. Please take a moment to learn our basics before jumping in.

First, all articles should be in our standard format, even if they are not yet complete. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with it. You can use one of our pre-defined article templates by typing the name of a non-existent article into the search box and hitting 'Go'.

Notice that article titles are case-sensitive and are not capitalized unless, like proper nouns, they are ordinarily capitalized (Poland or January). Also, take a moment to familiarize yourself with our criteria for inclusion, since Wiktionary is not an encyclopedia. Read our Transwiki process if you plan to work on importing information from Wikipedia. Don't go looking for a Village pump – we have a Beer parlour.

Finally, you can link Wikipedia pages, including your user page, using [[w:pagename]], {{wikipedia}}, or {{wikipediapar|pagename}}. Please do not create redirects to Wikipedia pages, though. They don't work.

We hope you enjoy editing Wiktionary and being a Wiktionarian.

Redirect is to Wikipedia talk page

[edit]

I meant for this to be a null edit, but ended up at the wrong page. On the other hand, that may have been intentional...but I'm guessing it was not. That is, your signature (talk) link goes to Wikipedia, not Wiktionary.

Hi. I've moved the topic you started in the Grease pit here. Cheers. — Vildricianus 19:30, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

My javascript doesn't seem to be working, and don't tell me that it's because the hyperlinks are outside of wiktionary, because identical text works perfectly on wikicities. Ingoolemo (talk) 03:53, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

In what way does your javascript not seem to be working? For bug reports, the following details make it easier for developers to diagnose and resolve the problem:
  • Your environment (i.e. your web browser, your selected skin).
  • The steps required to reproduce the problem.
  • Your expected results.
  • The observed behavior.
Rod (A. Smith) 04:11, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I also have problems getting the javascript for the Classic skin to work. I suggest you use monobook to get full advantage of the options. It seems that there is little support for standard.js from within Mediawiki. If the scripts you import are largely developed for monobook users, it's likely that it won't work. — Vildricianus 14:00, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've heard several reports of "popus" not working here at Wiktionary. Since you are one of the people involved in developing the Wikipedia Javascript capabilities, I'd hope you could help track down what the problem seems to be! As Rod observed, simply saying it doesn't work doesn't give us much of a start, narrowing down the problem(s). IIRC, Rory096 eventually got some of it working, but I'm unclear on the specifics. --Connel MacKenzie T C 14:19, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Popups do work, I got it a long time ago. — Vildricianus 14:30, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, trying Ingoolemo's js just now, I got some of the popus activated (hey! cool stuff!) but none of it worked quite right. Here are some of the errors:
Error: syntax error

Note that I've simply restored my js, rather than bog it down with the crashing-slow version. --Connel MacKenzie T C 14:42, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Edit to your userpage

[edit]

Hello Ingoolemo. I removed the redlink to incunabula from your talk page, since it's invisible beyond edit view and the software was confusing it as part of the redirect (which incorrectly added this page to Special:Brokenredirects). If you'd like to display content on the page, you should use a 'soft redirect' (not using #redirect syntax) instead. :) // Pathoschild (editor / talk) 02:49, 15 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cite Webster

Um, we have {{R:Webster 1913}} in our standard set? Robert Ullmann 23:49, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
